Who can sponsor family members in the UAE?
Sponsoring your family follows from your own visa status. If you hold a valid UAE residence visa, whether through employment, a freezone company, an investor visa, or a Golden Visa, you can generally apply to bring your spouse and children as dependents.
The key qualifier is financial. There is a minimum monthly salary requirement to sponsor dependents, and it is a real threshold, not a formality. The exact figure matters, and it is worth confirming with your freezone or the relevant authority before assuming you qualify. Getting this wrong means your family’s visa application is simply refused.
What does sponsoring a spouse involve?
The process for sponsoring a spouse in the UAE centres on two things: your documentation and your relationship documentation.
On the Irish side, you will need your marriage certificate. It needs to be properly attested before it is usable in the UAE, which means getting it apostilled in Ireland and then authenticated through the UAE embassy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the UAE. This step catches a lot of people off guard because it takes time and coordination from two countries. Starting it before you arrive, or immediately after you do, is sensible.
The UAE process itself involves medical screening for your spouse, biometric enrolment, and issuance of a residency visa and Emirates ID. The Emirates ID is what your spouse will use day-to-day: for opening a bank account, registering a child at school, accessing healthcare, and most other interactions with formal institutions.
How does sponsoring children work?
Children are added to your sponsorship in much the same way as a spouse. Birth certificates need to go through the same attestation process as a marriage certificate, so if you have children joining you from Ireland, factor that into the timeline.
For children born in the UAE after you have relocated, registration follows UAE procedures and generally feeds into the residency system more directly. Either way, each child receives their own Emirates ID.
The age limit for male dependents is 18 in standard cases. Female dependents can remain sponsored as unmarried daughters beyond that point, and students of either sex have an extension route through a student visa. If you have older children who are heading into or through university while you are in Dubai, it is worth mapping this out early.
Does the visa category you hold make a difference?
It does, and meaningfully so.
| Sponsor visa type | Can sponsor spouse? | Can sponsor children? | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Employment visa | Yes, subject to salary | Yes, subject to salary | Employer’s involvement may be needed |
| Freezone company owner | Yes, subject to salary | Yes, subject to salary | Salary must be formally documented |
| Golden Visa | Yes | Yes | Fewer salary constraints; spouse can co-sponsor children |
| Investor visa | Generally yes | Generally yes | Confirm with issuing authority |
The Golden Visa is worth noting specifically for Irish movers who qualify. The sponsorship terms are considerably more flexible, and a Golden Visa-holding spouse can independently sponsor children. For families where one partner qualifies for the Golden Visa and the other does not, this can simplify the overall structure considerably.
What about schooling and healthcare once the family is here?
A dependent visa and Emirates ID are what unlock most day-to-day services. School registration in Dubai requires both. Healthcare access through private insurers, which is mandatory in Dubai, is linked to residency status.
Health insurance for dependents is a real cost, and it needs to be arranged as part of the overall move budget. In Dubai, employers are required to provide health insurance for employees but that obligation does not automatically extend to dependents. If you are running your own company, you are arranging cover for your whole family yourself.
The practical timeline
Document attestation tends to be the longest lead-time item, particularly if you are coordinating it from Ireland before you have even left. Marriage certificates and birth certificates both need to pass through the same official chain. Starting that process early, ideally two to three months before you plan to travel, avoids the most common delay.
Once you are in the UAE and your own visa is issued, the dependent applications can proceed in sequence. The whole process for a spouse and one or two children, done in a straight run, typically takes several weeks rather than months, but it depends on how clean the documentation is.
